If you’re planning a destination wedding in Cape Town from the UK, USA, Europe or elsewhere overseas, one of the first questions you’re probably asking is:
What is the best month to get married in Cape Town?
And very often, what you’re actually asking is:
When will we have the best weather?
After more than 20 years of photographing weddings in the Western Cape, I wish I could give you a wonderfully simple answer.
I can’t.
Cape Town has a personality of her own.
We can have a glorious sunny winter wedding. We can have rain in December. We can start a wedding day with clouds, have sunshine by the ceremony and be fighting the infamous Cape wind by sunset.
It is part of getting married here.
What we can do is look at the seasons, historical weather patterns and what each month generally means for your wedding, guests, timeline, photography and film.
So if you’re trying to decide between a February vineyard wedding, an April celebration in Stellenbosch or a romantic winter wedding in the Cape Winelands, this guide is for you.
First, Understanding Cape Town Weather
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate.
In very simple terms:
Summer — December to February: warm, dry and generally sunny, but often windy.
Autumn — March to May: temperatures begin cooling, with more chance of rain as we move towards winter.
Winter — June to August: cooler and wetter, with June historically one of the wettest months.
Spring — September to November: temperatures rise, the landscape becomes greener and the days get longer, but spring weather can still be changeable.
Something international couples should understand is that Cape Town and the Cape Winelands don’t necessarily experience identical weather.
Cape Town has numerous microclimates.
It can be windy near the coast and considerably calmer inland. The city can be covered in cloud while Paarl is sitting in sunshine. The Winelands can also become significantly hotter than coastal Cape Town during summer.
So when you’re planning a wedding here, location matters almost as much as the month.
January Weddings in Cape Town
January is proper Cape Town summer.
Think long days, warm temperatures, blue skies and very little rainfall compared with winter.
For destination weddings, January can be wonderful because international guests can turn the wedding into a South African summer holiday.
But there is one thing I would never leave out when discussing a January wedding:
Wind.
Cape Town’s summer wind can be serious.
If you’re dreaming about an outdoor ceremony, particularly somewhere exposed near the ocean, you need to think about more than rain.
Veils move.
Hair moves.
Décor moves.
Sometimes everything moves.
From a photography perspective, summer gives us beautifully long evenings, which means we can often schedule the couple session later without losing the light.
January wedding considerations

Weather: Hot, dry and sunny overall
Rain: Generally low
Wind: Can be strong
Photography: Long days and lovely evening light
Best suited to: Outdoor celebrations, vineyard weddings, coastal weddings and destination weddings
Plan for: Heat, shade, hydration and wind
If your venue is inland around Paarl or the Winelands, also remember that temperatures can feel considerably hotter than they do along the coast.
February Weddings in Cape Town
February is one of Cape Town’s hottest months and remains part of our dry summer season.
For couples imagining a proper South African summer wedding, this is certainly a month to consider.
Vineyards are beautiful, evenings are long and outdoor receptions can be spectacular.
But February can get hot.
And there is a big difference between enjoying 30-degree weather beside a swimming pool and wearing a wedding dress or three-piece suit while standing in full sun.
This is where your ceremony time becomes important.
A later afternoon ceremony can be far more comfortable for you and your guests and can also position your couple session closer to beautiful evening light.
February wedding considerations

Weather: Hot and dry overall
Rain: Generally low
Wind: Still something to consider
Photography: Excellent opportunity for warm evening and golden-hour photography
Best suited to: Winelands weddings, outdoor receptions and international destination weddings
Plan for: Heat, sunscreen, hydration and guest comfort
March Weddings in Cape Town
I really like March.
It still feels like summer, but we are beginning to move towards autumn.
Days remain warm, rainfall is still relatively low and evenings can become slightly more comfortable.
For international couples who want a Cape Town wedding without necessarily choosing the height of summer, March deserves serious consideration.
The light begins changing too, and depending on the venue, we can get some beautiful warmer autumn tones as the month progresses.
March wedding considerations

Weather: Warm and generally dry
Rain: Still relatively low
Photography: Beautiful evening light
Best suited to: Almost every wedding style
Plan for: Warm days, changing evenings and the possibility of wind
April Weddings in Cape Town
April is when Cape Town starts feeling properly autumnal.
The temperatures are generally more comfortable, evenings become cooler and rainfall begins increasing compared with summer.
This can be a gorgeous month for weddings.
The light is softer, the extreme summer heat is less of a concern and the landscape starts changing.
For photography and film, April can give us beautiful atmosphere.
But this is also the point where I would start taking the wet-weather backup plan more seriously.
Not because your wedding will be rained out.
Because it could rain.
April wedding considerations

Weather: Mild to warm days with cooler evenings
Rain: Increasing
Photography: Soft autumn light and potentially beautiful cloud cover
Best suited to: Winelands, estate and indoor/outdoor weddings
Plan for: A proper rain alternative and something warm for later
May Weddings in Cape Town
May takes us closer to winter.
Temperatures drop, rainfall becomes more likely and the evenings are noticeably cooler.
But please don’t translate that into “bad wedding month.”
Winter and late-autumn weddings can be absolutely beautiful.
Cloudy weather gives us soft light.
Wet paving reflects light.
Vineyards and estates take on a completely different atmosphere.
And venues with fireplaces, candles and beautiful interiors suddenly come into their own.
May is a month where I would choose the venue carefully.
A venue that is only spectacular when everything happens outdoors is a different proposition from an estate that is equally beautiful inside.
May wedding considerations

Weather: Cooler and increasingly changeable
Rain: More likely
Photography: Soft, moody and romantic possibilities
Best suited to: Estates with strong indoor options and atmospheric celebrations
Plan for: Rain and cooler evenings
June Weddings in Cape Town
June is winter and historically one of Cape Town’s wettest months.
If you are planning a June wedding from overseas, I would absolutely have a proper wet-weather plan.
Not a little corner where 120 people can technically stand if it rains.
A real Plan B that you actually like.
Because if you love your backup ceremony location almost as much as your outdoor one, rain stops being a disaster.
And from a photographer’s perspective?
Rain is not automatically bad news.
Some of my favourite wedding photographs have happened in weather that was supposedly “terrible.”
Clouds can create drama.
Wet surfaces create reflections.
Clear umbrellas can look beautiful.
And sometimes the weather clears for ten minutes and gives us extraordinary light.
June wedding considerations

Weather: Cool and wet by Cape Town standards
Rain: Higher likelihood
Photography: Moody skies, soft light and dramatic possibilities
Best suited to: Venues with beautiful interiors and proper backup options
Plan for: Rain, warmth and an adaptable timeline
July Weddings in Cape Town
July is typically one of our coldest months.
Cape Town cold is also different from the deep winter temperatures many European or North American visitors are used to.
You probably aren’t going to be standing in snow.
But cold combined with rain and wind can feel chilly, especially in a wedding dress after sunset.
On the other hand, we also get spectacular clear winter days.
That is why I would never promise a couple that July means rain.
Historical patterns tell us what is more likely. They don’t tell us what will happen on your date.
July wedding considerations

Weather: Cool winter conditions
Rain: Relatively high compared with summer
Photography: Gorgeous winter light when conditions cooperate
Best suited to: Cosy Winelands venues, intimate weddings and elegant indoor celebrations
Plan for: Warmth, rain and earlier sunset
August Weddings in Cape Town
August is still winter, but we’re beginning to edge towards spring.
Rain is still very possible and temperatures remain cool.
The wonderful part is that the Western Cape landscape begins waking up.
Depending on where you’re getting married, things can start looking greener and fresher after the winter rain.
This can be a lovely time for couples who prefer mood, texture and softer light over dry midsummer landscapes.
August wedding considerations

Weather: Cool with winter rain still possible
Photography: Green landscapes, softer light and beautiful atmosphere
Best suited to: Countryside, forest and Winelands weddings
Plan for: A flexible indoor/outdoor setup
September Weddings in Cape Town
September is spring.
And spring in Cape Town can be wonderfully unpredictable.
One day feels like summer.
The next reminds you that winter hasn’t entirely packed its bags.
For wedding photography, however, September can be beautiful.
The landscape is often greener following winter rainfall, temperatures are becoming more comfortable and the days are getting longer.
If you want spring flowers, greenery and a fresher landscape, September is worth considering.
September wedding considerations

Weather: Mild but changeable
Rain: Declining from winter levels
Photography: Fresh greenery, flowers and softer spring light
Best suited to: Garden, estate, forest and Winelands weddings
Plan for: Layers and weather flexibility
October Weddings in Cape Town
October is when wedding season really starts feeling alive again.
Temperatures are warmer, days are longer and rainfall is generally lower than in winter.
It is a lovely month for outdoor ceremonies.
But Cape Town’s summer wind also starts becoming more relevant again.
From a photography point of view, we have more time to work with in the afternoon and evening, and spring landscapes can still look beautiful.
October wedding considerations

Weather: Warm spring conditions
Rain: Generally decreasing
Wind: Becoming more noticeable
Photography: Longer days and beautiful evening possibilities
Best suited to: Outdoor ceremonies, gardens, vineyards and destination weddings
Plan for: Wind as well as rain
November Weddings in Cape Town
November feels increasingly like summer.
The days are long, temperatures are warmer and rainfall is relatively low.
For international destination weddings, November is an attractive option because you can get much of the Cape Town summer experience before the December holiday rush.
Outdoor ceremonies, vineyards, garden weddings and coastal celebrations can all work beautifully.
Again, though:
Don’t forget the wind.
November wedding considerations

Weather: Warm and increasingly summery
Rain: Relatively low
Wind: Can be strong
Photography: Long evenings and excellent golden-hour opportunities
Best suited to: Outdoor and destination weddings
Plan for: Wind, shade and hydration
December Weddings in Cape Town
December is Cape Town in full summer mode.
Long days.
Warm weather.
Holiday atmosphere.
Beaches.
Wine farms.
Visitors from around the world.
It can be a fantastic time for a destination wedding, particularly if your guests are combining the wedding with a South African holiday.
But December also brings practical considerations.
Cape Town becomes extremely busy.
Accommodation, restaurants and tourist activities can book up.
And summer wind can absolutely make an appearance.
If you’re bringing guests from overseas, encourage them to organise accommodation and travel arrangements early.
December wedding considerations

Weather: Warm, dry and summery overall
Rain: Generally low
Wind: Can be significant
Photography: Long days and beautiful late-afternoon/evening light
Best suited to: Destination weddings, vineyards, outdoor celebrations and coastal weddings
Plan for: Wind, heat, peak-season availability and busy tourist areas
So, What Is the Best Month to Get Married in Cape Town?
There isn’t one.
And I actually think that’s important to say.
If your priority is warm weather and a lower historical chance of rain, summer and early autumn are the obvious months to investigate.
If you don’t love extreme heat and prefer softer weather, March and April may appeal to you.
If you love green landscapes, fireplaces, candles, moody skies and aren’t frightened by the possibility of rain, a winter wedding can be absolutely beautiful.
If you want greenery, flowers and moderate temperatures, spring deserves consideration.
The best month is the month that suits the wedding you actually want.
Don’t Choose Your Wedding Date Based on Weather Alone
This is particularly important for international couples.
Before choosing your Cape Town wedding month, also consider:
Your preferred venue.
Whether you want an outdoor ceremony.
What time the sun sets.
The type of photographs you love.
Guest travel.
School and public holidays.
Peak tourism periods.
Accommodation availability.
Whether your venue has a genuinely beautiful rain backup.
Whether you’re planning additional activities before and after the wedding.
A destination wedding isn’t only one day.
Your guests may be coming to South Africa for a week or two, so the season affects their entire experience.
What Cape Town Weather Means for Wedding Photography

As photographers and filmmakers, we cannot control the weather.
What we can control is how we respond to it.
After more than 20 years behind the camera, I don’t expect every wedding day to hand me perfect golden light.
I expect things to change.
That is wedding photography.
If it’s sunny, we work with the sun.
If it’s cloudy, we use the soft light.
If it’s windy, we work with movement rather than spending the entire session fighting it.
If it rains, we find covered areas, use interiors, umbrellas, reflections and gaps in the weather.
If the sky suddenly becomes spectacular, we may grab you for ten minutes and run outside.
Experience isn’t about having perfect conditions.
It’s about knowing what to do when conditions aren’t perfect.

Your Wedding Timeline Should Change With the Season
A January wedding timeline should not automatically be copied for a July wedding.
Sunset changes throughout the year.
So does the quality and direction of the light.
If you’ve fallen in love with warm golden-hour wedding photographs, we need to know that while planning your timeline.
Don’t schedule every speech, family photograph and reception formality during the best light and then wonder why your couple photographs don’t look like the sunset images you saved.
Sometimes we only need ten or fifteen minutes.
But we need those minutes at the right time.
This is something we help our wedding couples plan.
A Note for International Couples Planning From Overseas
Please don’t feel that you need to understand Cape Town’s weather before booking your wedding.
That’s why you choose experienced local suppliers.
Tell us what you’re imagining.
Show us the photographs you love.
Tell us whether an outdoor ceremony is important to you.
Tell us if you’re worried about heat.
Tell us if rain would completely ruin the venue you’ve chosen.
And ask questions.
A good local wedding team should help you understand what is realistic for your venue, month and timeline.

And Please Have a Plan B
This may be the most important advice in this entire article.
If you’re getting married outdoors in Cape Town — in any month — have a backup plan.
Not because we’re expecting disaster.
Because weather is weather.
Your Plan B should be somewhere you would genuinely be happy getting married.
If rain arrives, we don’t want you standing at the window heartbroken because the alternative space feels like an afterthought.
Choose a venue that works for your wedding in sunshine and in less-than-perfect weather.
Then whatever Cape Town decides to do, you can get on with the reason everybody is there in the first place.
You’re getting married.
