One of the first questions couples ask us when planning their engagement or pre-wedding session is:
“Where should we do our photos?”
Cape Town and the Western Cape certainly don’t make that decision easy.
We have beaches, forests, mountains, vineyards, city streets, beautiful architecture, open farmland and dramatic coastlines — often within an hour’s drive of one another.
But here’s the thing.
The best location isn’t necessarily the most popular one.
It is the location that suits you, the photographs you love and the story you want your session to tell.
At Ruth & Co Photography & Film, a pre-wedding or engagement session is included in most of our wedding packages. But this advice applies just as much to couples booking a once-off engagement session, anniversary shoot or simply wanting beautiful photographs together.
Before choosing a location, we recommend starting somewhere completely different.
Start with your style.
Step One: What Style of Photography Do You Love?
Not all photography looks the same.
There are different genres and approaches to couple photography — romantic, editorial, documentary, cinematic, lifestyle, fine-art, adventurous, urban, light and airy, dark and moody, and everything in between.
Before deciding where you want to be photographed, spend a little time figuring out how you want your photographs to feel.
Do you imagine yourselves running barefoot along a beach?
Dressed beautifully and walking through Cape Town’s city streets?
Surrounded by tall trees in a dark, romantic forest?
Sitting barefoot on the kitchen counter making coffee at home?
Walking through vineyards at sunset?
Or dressed to the nines, creating something that looks as though it belongs in the pages of a fashion magazine?
Those are completely different sessions.
And that’s exactly the point.
Once you understand what you’re drawn to, choosing your location becomes much easier.
Step Two: What Is Your Vision?
Forget Pinterest for a moment and imagine the finished photographs hanging in your home.
What do you see?
What are you wearing?
What is around you?
What does the light feel like?
Are the photographs sophisticated and editorial?
Relaxed and playful?
Wild and adventurous?
Soft and romantic?
Moody and cinematic?
Warm and homely?
There is no correct answer.
This is your session.
The goal isn’t to recreate somebody else’s engagement shoot. It’s to use inspiration to help us understand what makes you excited.
City & Urban Engagement Sessions
If you love architecture, fashion, movement and a little attitude, a city session may be perfect.
Think beautiful buildings, coffee shops, interesting walls, city crossings, staircases, parking garages, rooftops and busy streets.
An urban engagement session can be sophisticated and editorial, but it can also be wonderfully casual.
You could dress up and create something glamorous or wear jeans, grab coffee and simply walk around the city together.

Couples wanting something less traditionally “romantic”

Ruth & Co Tip: If you want an editorial city session, your clothing becomes particularly important. The environment and styling need to speak the same visual language.
Beach Engagement Sessions
There is a reason beaches remain incredibly popular for couple photography.
Bare feet, movement, wind, water and beautiful evening light can make a beach session feel effortless.
Cape Town also gives us enormous variety. One beach may offer rocks and dramatic coastline while another gives us endless sand and a completely different atmosphere.
But beaches come with their own challenges.
Wind matters.
Tides matter.
Crowds matter.
And Cape Town’s weather occasionally has a personality of its own.

Romantic photographs
Playful couples
Barefoot sessions
Sunset
Movement
Soft, natural styling
Adventurous couples who don’t mind getting a little wet
Ruth & Co Tip: Don’t fight the wind. If we’re doing a beach session on a breezy evening, flowing fabric and loose hair can sometimes turn the wind into part of the photograph rather than something we spend the entire session trying to control.
Forest Engagement Sessions
Forests create a completely different mood.
Tall trees, filtered light and darker backgrounds can produce photographs that feel romantic, intimate and almost cinematic.
We particularly love forest locations for couples drawn to moodier imagery.

Forests can become darker much earlier than open beaches or fields, so timing is particularly important.
Your photographer should plan around the actual light at the location rather than simply relying on Cape Town’s published sunset time.
Farm, Vineyard & Countryside Sessions
If you’re drawn to open spaces, mountains, vineyards, long grass and warm evening light, a countryside session may suit you perfectly.
This can be particularly beautiful for couples having a Cape Winelands wedding because the engagement photographs can complement the atmosphere of the wedding without necessarily looking identical.
FARM AND VINEYARD SESSIONS ARE GREAT FOR:
Natural romantic photography
Golden-hour sessions
Country styling
Mountain backdrops
Flowing dresses
Couples who feel most comfortable outdoors
Just remember that most farms and wine estates are private property.
Permission may be required and location fees can apply.
Mountain & Adventure Sessions
Perhaps your idea of romance involves hiking boots rather than champagne.
Then let’s work with that.
Mountain locations, hiking trails and dramatic viewpoints can produce spectacular photographs, particularly for couples who genuinely love being outdoors.
But these sessions require more planning.
We need to consider accessibility, weather, wind, safety, parking, permits, how far equipment needs to be carried and whether you’re comfortable walking in whatever you’re planning to wear.

The prettiest viewpoint on Instagram isn’t necessarily the safest or most practical place to conduct a professional photo session.

At-Home Lifestyle Couple Sessions
This is one of the options couples often overlook.
You don’t actually have to go anywhere.
Your home can tell more about your relationship than the most spectacular mountain in the Western Cape.
Make coffee.
Cook breakfast.
Sit on the kitchen counter.
Open a bottle of wine.
Put music on.
Lie on the couch.
Play with the dogs.
Do the things that look completely ordinary now but may become incredibly sentimental twenty years from today.

Lifestyle photography
Shy couples
Relaxed sessions
Couples with pets
Intimate storytelling
People who don’t enjoy posing
Photographs that feel deeply personal
Your home doesn’t need to look like an interior-design magazine.
It needs to look like your home.
Café, Bar or Restaurant Sessions
What if your story started over coffee?
Or wine?
Or cocktails?
A favourite café, restaurant or bar can be a brilliant engagement-session location — particularly when the place actually means something to you.
You could even begin there and then move into the surrounding streets for the second half of the session.
Remember that these are private businesses, so we would always need permission before assuming we can photograph there.
Why Not Choose Somewhere Meaningful?
Before searching Google for “best engagement photo locations Cape Town,” think about your own relationship.
Where did you meet?
Where was your first date?
Where did the proposal happen?
Where do you walk your dogs?
Where do you spend Sunday mornings?
Is there a beach you always visit?
A family farm?
A neighbourhood that feels like home?
A place where you always stop for coffee?
Sometimes the best location isn’t famous at all.
It’s simply yours.
Bring Your Pets
If your dog is part of your relationship, bring the dog.
Seriously.
Some of our favourite couple sessions have included four-legged family members.
Just tell us beforehand so we can choose a pet-friendly location and plan the session appropriately.
It also helps enormously to bring another person who can take your pet for a walk once we’ve captured the photographs involving them.
That way they can be part of the story without having to participate in every single photograph.
Can We Use More Than One Location?
Absolutely — provided the locations make sense together.
For example:
Coffee shop + city streets
Forest + open field
Beach + nearby rocks
Vineyard + mountain viewpoint
But don’t spend half your engagement session driving.
Two spectacular locations with 45 minutes of travel between them are often less useful than one great location where we can actually spend our time creating photographs.
Free vs Paid Engagement Photo Locations
This is something many couples don’t realise when they begin planning.
Not every beautiful location is free to use for professional photography.
Wine estates, farms, botanical gardens, private forests, nature reserves, heritage sites and other properties may charge photography fees.
Some require permits.
Some require bookings.
Some restrict professional photography completely.
And those fees can occasionally be surprisingly expensive.
We don’t want you falling in love with a location online and only discovering afterwards that it adds a substantial amount to your session.
This is why we always recommend discussing your ideas with your photographer before finalising the location.

These lists are starting points rather than every possible location. There are hundreds of possibilities, and we’re always happy to suggest something based on the look you’re trying to achieve.
Please Think About Safety Too
A beautiful photograph isn’t worth putting you, your partner or your photographer at unnecessary risk.
Some locations are perfectly comfortable at certain times of day and considerably less advisable at others.
Equipment also attracts attention.
An experienced local photographer will often know which areas we are comfortable working in, where we prefer not to photograph after dark, where parking may be problematic and when additional planning is necessary.
If you’re unsure, ask.
We would much rather suggest an alternative than put anyone in an uncomfortable situation for the sake of a photograph.
What Time Should We Do Our Engagement Session?
For outdoor sessions, light is one of the biggest considerations.
The middle of a bright summer afternoon can produce completely different photographs from the soft light near sunset.
Golden hour is popular for good reason, but it isn’t automatically the answer for every session.
A city session may look fantastic later in the evening.
A forest may need to start earlier because the trees block light.
An overcast beach day can give us beautifully soft light long before sunset.
A mountain can make the sun disappear earlier than expected.
Your photographer should help determine the best time for the location and style you’ve chosen.
What Should We Wear?
Your location and wardrobe should work together.
A glamorous floor-length dress can look incredible against dramatic architecture.
A flowing neutral dress may suit a windswept beach.
Boots, knitwear and earthy tones can work beautifully in a forest.
Jeans and a simple shirt might be perfect for an at-home lifestyle session.
Don’t choose your clothes because somebody on Pinterest wore them.
Choose something that feels like you — just perhaps the slightly more considered version of you.

Make a Moodboard
This is probably one of the most useful things you can do.
Pinterest is fantastic for this.
Create a board and start saving photographs you’re instinctively drawn to.
Don’t overthink it.
Save the beach photograph.
The black-and-white city portrait.
The photograph of the couple running.
The close-up you love.
The beautiful outfit.
The moody forest image.
Then send it to your photographer.
We are not going to copy somebody else’s photographs frame for frame.
That’s not the point.
A moodboard helps us understand your visual language.
Maybe we notice that almost everything you’ve saved includes movement.
Or dramatic landscapes.
Or very close, intimate portraits.
Or editorial posing.
Or laughter.
That tells us much more than saying:
“We just want nice photos.”
Share Your Vision With Your Photographer
This is probably the most important advice in this entire article.

Send the strange Pinterest photo you don’t know how to explain.
Tell us you want something romantic.
Tell us you hate posing.
Tell us you’d love photographs in the city at night.

Tell us you want to wear a ridiculous dress on the beach.
You don’t need to know exactly how to make the photograph happen.
That’s our job.
Give your photographer the seed of the idea and allow their experience and creativity to develop it with you.
The best engagement sessions are collaborations.

You learn that you don’t actually need to know how to pose.
We learn how the two of you naturally interact.
We discover which prompts make you laugh and which ones make you look at us as though we’ve completely lost our minds.

And when the wedding arrives, we’re no longer strangers pointing cameras at you.
